Once musicians are able to master their craft, Mervine said they are able to communicate onstage using nonverbal signals. The sheet music you’re seeing is our topic of conversation and we spend seven or eight minutes each having a moment to talk about it,” Mervine said. “Pick a topic and let’s have a conversation. Mervine compared playing jazz to talking with another person. He tells his band members where in the song to play, but not what to play. Mervine explained that 90 percent of the music they play is improvised while only 10 percent is arranged. That night, Mervine’s quartet included drummer Alejandro Castaño, guitarist Aaron Somerfield, bassist Patrick McDevitt and alto saxophone player Darryl Gott.ĭue to the nature of jazz, the musicians did not have to memorize pages of sheet music before the performance. He said the band rehearsed for two hours the day before the performance and then decided what they would play. Before Friday, they had never worked together as a group in this setting. Mervine explained that though the group of musicians he played with are not his official quartet, they were his quartet for the evening. So, Mervine asked four of his friends to play with him in a “one-off” performance. He explained that he received a text saying the musician who usually plays at Dazzle on Friday nights was unable to make the show. Gabe Mervine, band master and trumpet player, said he didn’t know he would play this gig until a week ago. “So, tonight for me was very exciting and rewarding, to be back in that. “Since returning to school, I’ve had less of an opportunity to participate in, you know, events such as this,” Wemlinger said. Scott Wemlinger, friend of the band who used to live near the old venue, said he was impressed with the new location and the quartet’s performance. People of all ages came to listen to live music, support their friends and experience the new location, which opened in 2017.
